Overview

High schools in Japan aren't all the same. Most are standard academic schools and prepare students for university. However, there are still 'vocational' high schools for learning trades like agriculture, forestry, machining, or information technology. One of the more rare varieties is the fishery (or suisan - 水産) high school, with only one such school in each coastal prefecture.

This video introduces Yaizu Suisan to junior high school students considering their next school. Yaizu Suisan High School (home page) is the only high school in the prefecture to offer courses for those wanting to enter the fishing industry. A cross section from each of the four primary courses (like scuba diving) and profiles of the more unique clubs at the school (including sumo) provide a fairly detailed description of student life at Yaizu Suisan.
